Biography in Brief

Married and the mother of three children, Farida Sellal was a telecommunications engineer and then pursued doctoral studies in solid-state physics. She was a consultant and an international expert, specialising in the restructuring and upgrading of enterprises in Algeria and in several countries. At the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, she was the first woman to be appointed by decree as wilaya director of Posts and Telecommunications. She launched and led the establishment and management of several large telecommunications systems, notably in the Grand Sud. It is from that period that her passion for the great Saharan spaces dates. She then taught in several universities in Algeria and published a number of articles on electronics and the physics of semiconductors in international scientific journals. She was a national and international expert with UNIDO in the field of industrial upgrading and restructuring.

Finally, she committed herself resolutely to the preservation and promotion of the culture and traditions of the Algerian South. The association “Sauver l’Imzad”, which she founded and has chaired for several years, is part of this commitment, which took concrete form in the creation of training schools and the building of the Maison de l’Imzad.

Author of “Farès”, “Nomade”, “Emeraude” — works that bear witness to Farida Sellal’s deep sensitivity in recounting, through sincere testimonies, her life but also her passions. Passionate about art and painting, she has taken part in several exhibitions in Algeria and around the world, which she has enlivened through lectures. She has also published several fine books and art books, as well as the proceedings of international conferences on the themes: Imzad, de la tradition à la modernité  (2005 and 2010) and Poésie des gens du désert (2011) as well as Pratiques sportives traditionnelles et le développement d’un tourisme culturel durable(2019).

The day of my thesis defence at the Djilali Liabes University in Sidi Bel Abbès, surrounded by my friends, my students and my inseparable life companion Abdelmalek.
